Another downturn in consumption and comparatively high prices in France meant that manufacturers had to grant their customers discounts in contracts for the third quarter or the entire second half. The majority of deals had already been struck in France during July.

One additional factor for the French market was that its newsprint prices had been relatively high because deals were done early on during the last round of price talks in December.
