Market players expect the hardwood and softwod pulp prices to head in opposite directions. The NBSK market seemed strong whereas BEK prices came further under pressure.

The latest price increases for northern bleached sulphate kraft (NBSK) pulp, which are now being pursued by all key manufacturers, are considered done and dusted, with the two sides left to argue about their magnitude. Suppliers were optimistic to achieve their goal of charging US$20/metric t more in September.

By contrast, bleached eucalyptus kraft (BEK) pulp manufacturers are under pressure to cut their prices. According to the latest PPPC figures BEK manufacturers' inventories grew by 5 days to 46 days in July - the situation is balanced at 39 days. However, suppliers contacted by EUWID claimed to have informed their customers that they were keeping their prices steady.
