Germany: downturn in fine paper business amid Coronavirus crisis

As the lockdown measures continue, producers of uncoated and coated woodfree paper are seeing their order backlogs shrink dramatically.

Suppliers on the German market for woodfree coated and uncoated paper are experiencing an ongoing collapse in order backlogs. Printing companies have often been forced to cancel orders and many contracts have been postponed. The slump in new order intake is dramatic, all players agree. Experts describe the situation for commodity grades in particular as an undeclared case of force majeure.

In response to the demand crash, many paper mills are taking temporary downtime. Companies are in crisis mode and temporary lay-offs and short-time working is being discussed everywhere.

This article is an excerpt from EUWID's latest report on the fine paper markets in Germany.

The entire report on the German coated and uncoated woodfree paper market is published in EUWID Pulp and Paper issue no. 16/2020, which will be available to our e-paper and print subscribers as of 16 April.
