High recovered paper costs force up GD board prices in Italy

Recycled board producers in Europe are pushing for higher sales prices to offset high recycled fibre costs. Partial success was reported from Italy in May.

As recovered paper prices continued to soar in April, several cartonboard manufacturers announced plans to raise GD board prices as quickly as possible. The price hike initiative was also motivated by a sudden increase in demand amid coronavirus outbreak, producers explained.

In May, manufacturers were partly successful in implemeting higher prices for GD board in Italy. Higher prices were reportedly taking effect for orders or deliveries from the start of May, mid-May or start of June. In contracts with price validity fixed until the end of the second quarter, however, prices cannot be moved before the start of July.

As May drew to a close, GD board suppliers in Italy still had good orders at hand, reflecting good cartonboard demand between February and April. However, order intake has slowed more and more in May and order books have been dwindling since the middle of the month at the latest.
