International Paper stopped production of newsprint in Madrid on 8 September and started with the conversion of PM 62 to the production of recycled containerboard.

International Paper has initiated the conversion of its newsprint machine in Madrid, Spain. The company told EUWID that newsprint production had definitely been stopped on 8 September. Works to convert the machine to the production of recycled containerboard were now underway, it added. IP is targeting a full ramp-up of PM 62 for early 2018.

IP acquired the Madrid newsprint mill from Holmen in mid-2016 with the aim to make it a mill for recycled corrugated case material. PM 62 had the capacity to produce 330,000 tpy of newsprint. According to IP, the machine will be able to make up to 380,000 tpy of recycled containerboard after conversion.

The recovered paper markets have started to feel the effects of the machine stoppage already in August. Merchants in France, for example, said that the mill stopping to buy raw material had led to increasing recovered paper supply on the market. Since supply was already high due to lacking export opportunities to China, recovered paper prices began to fall.
