Puma II project involves investment of BRL8.1bn to build nearly 1 million tpy of kraftliner capacity by 2023 in Ortigueira.

Brazilian paper and board manufacturer Klabin will go ahead with its mega-investment project in Ortigueira in the country’s Paraná state. The company’s management has approved installation of two new kraftliner machines along with two integrated pulp lines. The new machines will give rise to 920,000 tpy of additional capacity for unbleached as well as white-top kraftliner by 2023. Investment volume for Puma II, as the expansion project is called, amounts to BRL8.1bn (roughly €1.82bn).

Reports add that approval for the construction has already been issued. The first phase of the expansion will reportedly be realised in the next 24 months. It is said to involve building one line for unbleached eucalyptus pulp and installing the first kraftliner machine with capacity of 450,000 tpy for commissioning in 2021. Klabin adds that the PM will be able to produce unbleached as well as white-top kraftliner in basis weights from 80 to 200 g/m².

A second PM for 470,000 tpy of kraftliner with a basis weight range of 150-300 g/m² will be installed subsequently and commissioned in 2023. Klabin also plans to install a second production line for unbleached pulp which will provide the raw material to produce kraftliner.
