The company invested CAD250m in the conversion project at its Trois-Rivières mill. Production of lightweight recycled linerboard launched successfully, says Kruger.

Canada's newsprint, tissue and packaging manufacturer Kruger Inc has completed the start-up phase of its PM 10 recycled containerboard machine at the Trois-Rivières mill in Quebec in May. The conversion project was implemented over a period of 20 months and was completed at the total cost of CAD250m.

The former newsprint machine will produce up to 360,000 tpy of lighweight recycled linerboard with basis weights ranging from 88 to 171 g/m². According to Kruger, the machines has a width of 301 inches (7.64 meter) and was thus offering high trim efficiency.

A portion of recycled containerboard produced on PM 10 will be used by Kruger's Canadian packaging plants in LaSalle and Brampton, while the remainder will be sold to corrugated packaging manufacturers across Canada and the United States.

Five years from concept to start up

According to Kruger, major consulting, engineering and technology groups from Canada, Europe and the United Stated had been involved in the conversion of PM 10 at the company's Trois-Rivières mill and it took a total of five years to study, develop and implement the investment project.

Kruger had tapped KSH, Pöyry, Kadant and Norton to assess and validate the project, and to analyse and review the costs and market conditions. Kadant's subsidiary Kadant Black Clawson received the order to supply an install the mill's new 1,150 bon-dry metr.t recycled fibre (OCC) processing and stock preparation line. Valmet had supplied the actual grade conversion rebuild on PM 10 and had reportedly modernised the paper machine from headbox to winder. The drive systems for the PM 10 and the winder unit had been delivered and installed by the Swiss technology company ABB.
