Lecta idles production at Cartiere del Garda amid Covid-19 issues

Italy's Garda fine paper mill temporarily stops operation due to difficulties arising from the coronavirus pandemic. Paper merchant Polyedra not affected.

Lecta has decided to suspend production at the Cartiere del Garda woodfree coated paper mill in Italy amid a rising number of coronavirus infections in Europe and related industrial and logistical issues. Operations are to be stopped today, 19 March at the end of the second shift, and the downtime is scheduled to last until 25 of March.

"We have anticipated a temporary shutdown already budgeted for April," a company spokesperson explained. Lecta, however, is reassessing the situation day by day and will take necessary decisions in due time, he said.

According to Garda's parent Lecta, there were various reasons for the production downtime at Cartiere del Garda, including commercial ones. The safety and health of workers was the top priority for the company. What is more, demand situation is suffering amid the Covid-19 spread, and there were increasing issues with fine paper deliveries, especially to customers outside of Italy. Cartiere del Garda had "difficulties to guarantee deliveries of final product across Europe," the Lecta spokesperson said.

Italian paper merchant Polyedra, part of the Lecta Distribution Group, will maintain regular operations, supplying customers from stock, the company spokesperson told EUWID.
