Lucart Group to cut up to 80 jobs at Airtissue

Lucart acquired Georgia-Pacific's Italian business in January and is now streamlining the company's business structure. Up to 80 employees might be made redundant.

Lucart Group plans to cut as many as 80 jobs at its subsidiary Airtissue, the former Georgia-Pacific Italia. According to the union CGIL, the Italian manufacturer of tissue and hygiene products Lucart has already presented a corresponding business plan. Lucart was reportedly trying to respond to a decline in volumes and to make the company structure more efficient by eliminating duplications that resulted from the takeover of Georgia-Pacific Italia. Lucart could not be reached for comment.
The business plan presented by Lucart entails cutting of up to 41 jobs cut at the Castelnuovo di Garfagnana plant. About 40 more positions could be eliminated at the sites in Avigliano in the province of Potenza and at the company’s headquarters in Genoa. Final approval of Lucart’s plan is still pending and it might be discussed again and potentially revised, the union in Lucca stressed. The next meeting is planned for 22 March.
As part of Georgia-Pacific’s withdrawal from the European business, Lucart Group acquired the US company’s tissue and airlaid business from Georgia-Pacific Italia in mid-January 2012. The company was then renamed Airtissue.
Castelnuovo di Garfagnana facility operates a tissue machine with a capacity of 50,000 tpy as well as several processing lines with a total ca-pacity of 40,000 tpy. Airlaid tissue is manufactured in the Avigliano mill, where production capacity is around 10,000 tpy.
