Market players complete newsprint price talks in Italy

Negotiations on terms and conditions for newsprint deliveries on the newsprint market in Italy have come to an end in March with six-month contracts featuring slightly lower or unchanged prices compared to the previous contract period.

The final price and delivery agreements on Italy's newsprint market were put to bed in March. Insiders on both sides of the market report that talks were sometimes tough and had an unexpected outcome, with manufacturers granting customers mark-downs on fourth quarter prices.

According to EUWID sources on the market in Italy, manufacturers have made their pricing policies heavily contingent on the previous price level and how long the new contracts set prices in stone. A few paper producers asserted that price reductions had only been offered for contracts with shorter price validity terms and for contracts already featuring above-average sales prices.

Newsprint manufacturers seem to be a little busier again after a poor start to the new business year. They are reportedly benefiting from sustained downgrading by commercial printers and retailers who had boosted their advertising activity and hence demand for newsprint for flyers and inserts in the run-up to the Easter break.
