MM finalises purchase of Kotkamills
03 Aug 2021 −

Mayr-Melnhof (MM) has finalised the acquisition of Kotkamills and strengthens its position in the markets for cupstock and barrier board grades.

A few days of the announcement of the completion of the sale of its two FBB mills in Germany and The Netherlands, Mayr-Melnhof (MM) announced the finalisation of the acquisition of Finnish FBB manufacturer Kotkamills.

“Through the acquisition, MM strengthens its position in the FBB market with an attractive range of barrier cartonboard solutions that can replace polyethylene-coated cartonboard,” the company writes. Moreover, MM enters the growing cupstock market and diversifies its offering with saturating kraft paper in which Kotkamills is one of the global leaders, according to reports.

"MM Kotkamills will take a strong and dynamic position within MM as the innovator in novel cupstock solutions based on water-based dispersion barriers applied by on-line technology. Our medium-term objective is to raise the sales volume to the capacity of close to 400,000 tpy of cartonboard," says Peter Oswald, CEO of the MM Group.

MM Kotkamills operates a modern primary fibre board machine in Europe (built in 2016), a machine for saturating kraft paper with a capacity of 170,000 t and a sawmill, MM writes. The mill employs approximately 500 people and generated sales of around €380m in 2020.

MM is Europe's largest producer of cartonboard and folding cartons. In 2020, the group generated sales of around €2.5bn and employed approximately 10,000 people.
