Continuation of production on BM 4 is not economiclly viable. The closure of the BM 4 will affect 150 employees, says MM Karton.

Mayr melnhof plans to discontinue cartonboard production at the group's Hirschwang mill in Austria by the end of the year. The BM 4 has an installed capacity of 80,000 tpy and produces recycled cartonboard grades.

The examination of the framework conditions - machine age and design, increasing market requirements - showed that it was not possible to continue production economically on the board machine in Hirschwang, MM explained.

According to MM Karton, the Hirschwang mill specialises in the production of recycled cartonboard grades with basis weights over 400 g/m². The mill produces standard grades as well as specialty board for for frozen food packaging, skin packaging, blister packs and deep drawing applications.

The Hirschwang site is also home to MM's packaging subsidiary Neupack and will concentrate on the production of folding carton in the future.
