Mounting pressure on publication paper prices in Italy

Slow demand and abundant supply are shaping business in many segments of the Italian paper and board market.

The wind has been blowing from a different direction on Italy's publication paper market for a few weeks now, both buyers and sellers agree. More abundant supply is colliding with slower demand and making prices soft again, according to EUWID sources in Italy.

A few players on both sides of the market reported about price cuts for newsprint and magazine paper applying for deliveries as of April or May. Suppliers were on the hunt for orders, and were reportedly signalling their willingness to compromise on prices.

At the end of the day, though, paper manufacturers saw no need to panic. The majority of prices in Italy is expected to stay unchanged for a few more months as a lot of paper is subject to contracts running till the end of June and beyond.
