Newsprint costs more in the UK from 1 July

Thanks to good demand and good workloads, newsprint manufacturers were able to increase prices in the UK. However, the amount of the increase is varying.

After raising prices at the start of this year, newsprint manufacturers have tacked on more for the second half of the year as their machines continue to work at good capacity utilisation.

However, market players provided wildly varying information about how much prices had jumped. Quite a few producers had entered talks seeking modest mark-ups so that they could walk away without having had to make too much in the way of concessions, insiders said. Others were tending to strive to take whatever they could get. Buyers were unable to mount effective opposition to higher prices since they have hardly other options for sourcing material. Publishers in particular are facing mounting pressure on their margins.
