Newsprint negotiations in Germany bogged down

|

Most new contracts for newsprint in Germany are still outstanding. No more progress has been made since the turn of the year. From what market observers say, publishers’ and printers’ buyers see little reason to push negotiations. Obtaining paper is said to be no problem and the assumption is that prices are showing a tendency to fall. The buyers' strategy is therefore to wait and see. However, market experts say suppliers have not yet "made the right move” in the negotiations. One or two major producers are keeping a low profile, reports say, hence the lack of orientation. Many EUWID sources believe the new price level for standard newsprint will be lower than at the end of 2011. Others are expecting prices to settle at the level of the first half-year 2011 and some consider it likely that prices for coldset paper could move slightly below the €500 mark.
