Newsprint manufacturers have caused a stir by unveiling plans to institute substantial price hikes for newsprint in Germany.

Along with pricing, availability is still an issue on the market. Additional paper can not be delivered in many cases. Both suppliers and buyers report that paper mills are giving lengthy lead times even for contractual orders.

Paper manufacturers are facing hikes in costs for paper chemicals, auxiliary materials and logistics in addition to the unique situation for recovered paper. It was hard to get a grip on the cost structure, everyone said. Historically low newsprint contract prices were a concern. The paper industry was turning in dramatic losses, even without the raw material crisis, one producer stressed.
