Papyrus to close shop in Italy

Demand situation on the graphic paper market in Italy is weak, not least due to the coronavirus pandemic, with little prospects for business turnaround, according to Papyrus' parent Opti Group.

Swedish B2B wholesale group Opti Group is closing its distribution office in Italy. The closure of the group's subsidiary Papyrus Srl would "be completed in 2021, strictly following the compliance rules," the company said. Commercial activities are expected to be discontinued already in the first quarter of 2021.

Opti Group blames its decision on the difficult economic environment and the complexity of the paper merchanting business in Italy, both aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Italian branch has been underperforming for years and the chances for developing an economically sustainable business on the market in Italy were rather weak in the medium and long term, Papyrus' parent Opti Group explained.

14 people are reportedly affected by the closure of Papyrus Srl in Italy.

Last year, Opti Group had already retired from the market in Germany. Papyrus Deutschland was sold to Inapa and merged in 2020 with Papier Union to Inapa Deutschland.
