On 21 January a fire started in a gearbox in the press section of PM 1 at Smurfit Kappa's Roermond Papier plant in the Netherlands. The fire damaged part of the drying hood and the heat exchangers on the roof. Although the damage in the machine is substantial, it is expected that the mill will restart during the couse of this week, a company spokesperson said. The other two machines of the mill were not affected. Total loss of paper production is estimated at about 3,500 t of recycled containerboard.
