Pulp prices rose again on the European market in May, as expected. Producers of both bleached softwood and hardwood pulp were able to fully implement their announced hikes of $80/t. Buyers reportedly did not put up any major resistance to the hike because the market remains strong in most parts of Europe.

Contracted volumes were being fully called off, according to producers, and buyers rarely threatened to reduce their orders for the following month because of the price hikes. Greater resistance was seen only in the Mediterranean region, and there especially from tissue producers, said one pulp supplier.

Manufacturers want the price rally for bleached eucalyptus kraft (BEK) pulp and northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp to continue for deliveries in June. There are new announcements of price hikes for both grades.
