Norske Skog's Golbey paper mill had to stop newsprint production on one machine. Operations are expected to be down for three weeks.
One of two newsprint machines at Norske Skog's Golbey mill in eastern France is standing still at the moment. A company spokesperson informed EUWID that a fatal accident had occurred at the site during maintenance work. Production of PM 1 has been stopped on 6 February and is expected to resume on 26 February. The machine has a capacity to produce 250,000 tpy of newsprint.
The spokesperson said the company had planned a stoppage to carry out maintenance work due every ten years. Operations were supposed to be restarted last week, but the downtime was prolonged due to the accident. The accident victim reportedly was an external worker. The maintenance work had now been postponed to September, EUWID was told.
In order to make up for the production loss caused by the downtime, Norske Skog plans to operate with high speed in the coming weeks, although the market for newsprint is quite weak at the moment. PM 1 is the smaller of two newsprint machines at the Golbey site. The second machine has a capacity of 335,000 tpy of newsprint.
