Pulp prices remain unchanged in December

The year 2021 has ended with stable pulp prices across the board in Europe. But a first producer has issued a price hike announcement for NBSK pulp in January.

Although negotiations for December prices had not been completely concluded in the first week of the new year, all signs point toward stable pulp prices in December.

While the market for hardwood pulp was rock solid in the final month of 2021, in the softwood pulp segment, the end of the year was not quiet as in other years amidst heated discussions with converters. One Scandinavian producer had informed its customers in the middle of December of a price hike for northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp with effect from 1 January 2022. Industry insiders, however, do not believe that the hike can be implemented quickly and view the announcement as feint to thwart moves to take prices down.
