Pulp producers announce higher prices for both benchmark grades as from 1 January

Pulp suppliers would like see 2021 begin with sometimes markedly higher prices as pulp producers announced hikes effective as of 1 January for both hardwood and softwood pulp.

Prices for NBSK already went up in December, with first plans for further hikes in January already being announced in mid-December.

Prices for BEK, however, were rolled over from November to December despite “excellent demand”. However, as price hike announcements for BEK for January as such might not have come as a surprise to paper mills, they expressed some concern about the amount suppliers demand.

"I cannot recall such a hike in a single step ever before,” a respondent said. Therefore, some market experts said they expected the hike to be implemented in two instalments, or rebates to increase from January.
