Producers' plans to institute higher prices for recycled corrugated case material were not successful in Germany. Prices remained stable amid regular demand.
EUWID interviews with market players in Germany in the last week of April revealed that brown recycled corrugated case material will not cost more from 1 May. Roughly two weeks earlier, paper manufacturers had unveiled plans to tack on more from that date after already instituting mark-ups in March. Even though various contacts were still talking about such plans, there were no signs of any tangible success.
Higher prices certainly seemed plausible when the announcement was made. The paper industry had sold good amounts of paper in March, and recovered paper had not only become scarce but also more expensive as a result.
The state of affairs then changed very quickly. Paper mills were seeing their capacity utilisation level off and demand return to normal. Therefore, not enough pressure could be built up to underpin potential price hikes.
