Reno de Medici to acquire Barcelona Cartonboard

Italy's Reno de Medici is expanding into Spain. The company intends to take over the country's leading board producer Barcelona Cartonboard.

The European board market is consolidating. Italian board producer Reno de Medici (RDM) has announced the acquisition of Barcelona Cartonboard, Spain's leading board producer. According to RDM, Barcelona Cartonboard is the seventh largest producer of recycled board in Europe. The Spanish company is sold by German private equity fund Quantum Capital Partners.  According to RDM, the Board of Directors has already approved the transaction. A preliminary agreement between the companies is to be signed by the end of June while the transaction is expected to be finalised by the end of the year.

Barcelona Cartonboard produces recycled as well as virgin-fibre board. The company describes itself as the leading producer of GD board and the only producer of GC board in Spain. The company's plant in Castellbisbal in Catalonia has a capacity of 180,000 tpy and employs around 230 people. Last year, Barcelona Cartonboard posted net sales of €122.3m and a net profit of €1.4m.
