Decision driven by the ongoing significant decline in newsprint consumption, coupled with the increasing cost of recovered paper.

Resolute Forest Products today announced the indefinite idling of the Thorold newsprint paper mill in Canada's Ontario province. The mill runs one machine and has a production capacity of approximately 200,000 tpy of 100 % recovered paper based newsprint. The indefinite idling of the paper mill was effective immediately, the company explained.

Thorold newsprint mill had reportedly been taking downtime since mid-December 2016. The company blames its decision to indefinitely shut-down the production site on "ongoing structural decline in North American newsprint consumption, coupled with the increasing cost of recovered paper."

Over 100 workers are affected by the closure of newsprint operations in Thorold. However, Resolute explained it was collaborating with Stone House Investments Holdings, an independent third party interested in converting Thorold to production of an alternative product. Resolute believes "conversion of the mill would provide a more sustainable future for the operation, its workforce and the surrounding community."
