EC competition regulators have inspected RISI's office in Brussels as part of an ongoing investigation into the kraft paper and industrial paper sacks sector in the EU.

Euromoney Institutional Investor Plc (Euromoney) announced that the Brussels office of its forest products information providing subsidiary RISI has been recently searched by the European Commission (EC) competition authority. Euromoney said that the EC was investigating the EU sector of kraft paper, adding that RISI was "committed to working fully with the Commission during the process."

The European Commission published a statement on an unannounced inspection "at the premises of a company operating in the kraft paper sector." The inspection was part of an ongoing investigation into the kraft paper and industrial paper sacks market and took place upon concerns that that the inspected company may have violated EU antitrust rules, the EC competition authority explained.

Besides providing information to the pulp, paper and packaging industry, RISI is also organising industry events. Financial Times is citing a person familiar with previous competition investigations as saying it was not unusual for competition authorities to look into industry meetings. "As a place where companies meet to exchange information, officials can seek to find out if that might stray into-anti-competitive behaviour," Financial Times writes.
