Sappi North America has announced the global availability of SBS board from its US-based Somerset mill in Skowhegan, Maine.

In February 2017, the company had announced a major investment of $165m at the site to convert PM 1 from coated fine paper to packaging board. This investment constitutes an increase in the mill’s paper and board capacity by 180,000 tpy to nearly 1 million tpy, according to the information Sappi issued in February 2017. The rebuild of the PM was finalised in October 2018.

The new Proto C1S grade is a sturdy, single-ply SBS for everyday premium packaging applications, writes Sappi. The folding carton board can be applied to cosmetics, health and beauty, confectionery, consumer electronics and other consumer packaging. This line can also be used for magazine and book covers, shopping bags, point of sale (POS) materials, direct mail and more.

Spectro C1S is a single-ply SBS for high-quality packaging and graphic applications in the consumer and lifestyle markets, similar to Proto. It is suitable for UV, aqueous, or specialty coatings, hot foil stamping, embossing, special effects, or varnishes, and is very light weight.
