One machine for coated magazine paper is left running at the site and will be closed within the next seven weeks.

After having shut down the first machine in January, SCA has now closed the second paper machine at its Ortviken paper mill in Sweden on 4 February. LWC1 produced coated publication paper for magazines and commercial print, the company says. It was started in 1990 and had an annual capacity of 250.000 tpy. The last paper machine left running at the Ortviken mill is another coated magazine paper machine, which has a capacity of approximately 250.000 tpy.

Last year SCA decided to shut down all of its three publication paper machines at its Ortviken mill in the first quarter of 2021, thus removing about 760.000 tpy of publication paper output capacity from the market.

SCA will develop its pulp business at the site of its Ortviken paper mill in Sundsvall. The company spends SEK1.45bn on converting and expanding the existing TMP production into CTMP. Next year in 2022, new equipment will be delivered and installed, and the start-up of CTMP production is scheduled at the beginning of 2023. Pulp output will rise to 300,000 pty, making the mill one of the largest CTMP production units.
