Smurfit Kappa wants to improve its integration rate in Mexico and has invested in a new 100,000 tpy PM at the Los Reyes mill which has now started up.
The Smurfit Kappa Group (SKG) has finalised its investment project in Mexico. The company announced it had recently started up a new machine at its Los Reyes plant. The new PM 6 is reportedly able to produce up to 100,000 tpy of recycled containerboard. The new machine, which required an investment of $62m, had been announced back in late 2015 and has now been put into operation with a delay of more than six months. According to SKG, this project is one of its largest investments in Mexico in recent years.
SKG said that the new machine would enable it to produce high performance containerboard and strengthen its offering for the agricultural and electrical appliance sectors. It would also facilitate greater integration within the group's converting plants and significantly increase the energy efficiency oft the Los Reyes plant, the group added.
SKG produces recycled corrugated case material as well as folding boxboard at the Los Reyes paper mill. With the new PM 6, the site now operates three machines. The Los Reyes mill is one of the company's three containerboard mills in Mexico, where it operates several converting plants.
