Stora Enso has completed the conversion of its Oulu paper mill for the production of kraftliner. The pulp mill has been in production since mid-January and the newly converted machine is in a start-up phase.

The project was launched in May 2019 following a decision to invest €350m. It was completed within the budget frame, Stora Enso informs. The packaging machine will now be ramped up during the first quarter and is expected to reach its designed production capacity - 450,000 tpy - by the end of this year.

Stora Enso will produce kraftliners of its Avant Forte product range. These kraftliners have three fibre layers and are particularly suited for packaging applications for fresh, fatty or moist food, as well as high-end e-commerce packaging, according to company information.

In the conversion project, one of the two former fine paper machines was converted for packaging board production. The pulp mill and drying machine were modified to produce unbleached brown pulp (530,000 tpy), about 150,000 t of which are sold externally. When fully ramped up, the Oulu mill is expected to generate a €300m annual sales increase for Stora Enso's Packaging Materials division.
