Tough negotiations over second step of kraftliner price inreases in Germany

After brown kraftliner manufacturers managed to increase their prices in a first instalment in Germany in July, negotiations about the second portion were still in progress at the start of August.

Prices were originally supposed to rise for a second time with effect from 1 August, but market players were reporting at the end of the first week in August that talks were not done and dusted yet.

Brown kraftliner manufacturers wanted to use their good capacity utilisation as an opportunity to apply greater pressure when putting in place the second instalment.

A variety of converters believed that prices would not rise any more after the first instalment, arguing that no price increases had been implemented in Italy and new volumes from the Varkaus mill were entering the market.
