The antidumping and countervailing duties on Canadian imports of certain grades of uncoated mechanical papers into the USA will remain in effect for the time being. One company is doubly affected.
The US Department of Commerce (DOC) has announced its final decision on antidumping and countervailing duties on Canadian imports of newsprint and other uncoated mechanical papers. The official notification states that the preliminary duties imposed in March and January of this year will remain in force, but not to the same extent.
The DOC now imposed antidumping duties of 16.88% instead of the original 22.16% and for only one company - Catalyst Paper. The countervailing duties, which ranged between 4.42% and 9.93% under the preliminary decision in January, have also been revised downwards and now amount to 0.82%-9.81%.
The case is not yet closed. The US International Trade Commission (USITC) will announce its final decision on 17 September, independently of the DOC, and still has the option to overturn the decision. A possible tariff order would follow on 24 September.
