There is no future for Torraspapel's Sarrià de Ter plant. Lecta will close the base paper and uncoated specialty paper mill and transfer production to other sites in Spain.
Lecta's subsidiary Torraspapel has concluded the negotiation process with employee representatives on the future of the Sarrià de Ter plant near Girona. According to the company, there is no viable alternative for the site. The paper mill will be gradually closed over the next few months and production transferred to other production sites, primarily to the Zaragoza and Motril paper mills.
"The paper industry has been experiencing very difficult conditions, with a permanent drop in demand. In addition to the decline in sales, Sarrià de Ter has been affected by the impact of changes in the legislative framework for the electricity industry in recent years." Lecta commented in yesterday's press release. 73 out of 123 Sarrià de Ter will be relocated to other manufacturing sites in Spain.
Sarrià de Ter is one of Torraspapel's six mills in Spain. The mill houses one paper machine with a capacity of 65,000 tpy of base paper and woodfree uncoated paper. Torraspapel also runs an on-site combined heat and power plant with a capacity of 25 MW. The closure of the site is closely linked to the imminent start-up of a second-hand PM 7 at the Zaragoza pulp and paper mill.
