Newsprint paper prices pointing down in Poland

Negotiations on newsprint deliveries in the first half of 2012 have come to an end in February with last contracts being signed at the end of the month. Newsprint is said to be selling well below the €500-mark in Poland in many instances.

The last contracts on the newsprint market in Poland were inked at the end of February. Paper producers are hardly pleased with the outcome of the latest price round which has seen newsprint prices in the first half 2012 decreasing by 15-20€/t compared with the second half of 2011. Buyers are apparently paying even less for domestic paper or newsprint imports from Russia.

Newsprint contracts have been signed at prices that were too low given that recovered paper and pulp costs had been spiralling since the start of the year, Euwid sources stated. Prices would have to be corrected at the start of the second half if costs continued to climb, they said.

However, companies might already run into difficulties before then, experts suspected. Paper producers have gone too far when making price concessions to their customers, one insider pointed out.
