Heinzel Pöls to start producing unbleached pulp

Austrian pulp and paper producer Heinzel Pöls, a subsidiary of Heinzel group, is investing in capacity and portfolio expansion to produce unbleached pulp from autumn 2023.

Until now, the company's Pöls mill has only been producing bleached softwood pulp with an installed capacity of 450,000 tpy.

Part of the pulp output from the site will be used for integrated production of packaging paper, and the remainder is sold as market pulp, Heinzel informed.

The company operates two paper machines at the Pöls site which produce a total of 200,000 tpy of bleached kraft paper. Heinzel Pöls’ investment will raise the capacity of the Pöls pulp mill to 500,000 tpy. Unbleached kraft pulp (UKP) will make up roughly 100,000 tpy of this.

UKP is used to produce brown kraft paper which Heinzel plans to produce at the Steyrermühl paper mill near Laakirchen in Austria. Heinzel is currently rebuilding the PM 3 at the former UPM publication paper facility to produce lightweight kraft paper grades. The rebuilt PM will run as PM 6 at Heinzel Pöls and will be rated for an annual capacity of 150,000 t.
