Mercer International announced the temporary curtailment of operations at its Celgar pulp mill in Castlegar, Canada, including wood acceptance.

Mercer reported that from today’s point of view, the curtailment was to become effective on 29 July and last until 28 August 2023. According to the company, this temporary measure was caused by the significant loss of rail transport capacity resulting from the Vancouver port job action.

The company’s President and CEO, Juan Carlos Bueno, commented: “Regrettably, we are not able to run the mill economically until rail operations resume regular services. We currently expect the curtailment to persist for about a month.” According to him, the company is seeking alternative solutions to minimize any further disruptions.

Mercer Celgar mill can produce 520,000 t of northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp and 250,000 litres of turpentine per year. The mill processes 2.3 million m³ of wood per year.

Headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, Mercer International is a globally operating forestry company with branches in Germany, the US and Canada, whose annual production capacity amounts to 2.3 million t of pulp.
