The temporary shutdowns will effect deliveries to customers and are expected to have a significant financial impact, Metsä Group says.

Production at Metsä Group's bioproducts and containerboard mill in Kemi mill will be temporarily halted due to ongoing transport workers' strikes in Finland.

According to Metsä Fibre, shutdown operations at the pulp mill will start on 17 March and production will stand idle as of 18 March 2024. During the first strike week from 11 to 17 March production at the Kemi bioproduct mill would be limited to a minimum. Once the rail transport of wood raw material was interrupted, production would be completely halted, the company added.

Production at the Kemi white-top kraftliner mill, which is operated by the group's subsidiary Metsä Board, is to be stopped following the shutdown of the bioproducts site.

Metsä Group already announced similar shutdown measures for the group's pulp mills in Kaskinen and Joutseno. Metsä expects the downtime to have a significant impact on the group's financials and customers' deliveries.
