UPM shuts down Schongau PM 6 and Steyrermühl PM 4 for good

The closure of the two paper machines will reduce UPM's production capacity for publication paper by 485,000 tpy.

As of today, UPM is not producing any more newsprint at the Steyremühl mill in Austria. The company has definitely stopped newsprint production on the mill's 320,000 tpy PM 4 on 28 June. The mill is being sold to Austria's pulp and paper company Heinzel Group. The closing of the transaction is expected for the start of the next year.

UPM also completed the employee consultation process at the Schongau site in Germany regarding the closure of the mill's paper machine PM 6. According to UPM, PM 6 will be permanently closed today. The closure will afect a total 136 persons at the Schongau site.

Schongau PM 6 is geared for a capacity of up to 165,000 tpy of uncoated publication paper. UPM will reportedly continue producing all paper grades previously produced on PM 6 on the mill's PM 9.
