As part of its Autumn budget statement, the UK government has announced in late November that it will increase the plastic packaging tax (PPT) to £217.85 per tonne from 1 April 2024, in line with the consumer price index (CPI). The rate of the tax stood at £200 per tonne when it was introduced on 1 April 2022, equivalent to about €230. Since that date, the PPT has been levied on manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging that has less than 30 per cent recycled content.
