Subdued demand for ordinary recovered paper grades in Europe and Asia culminated in additional sharp price reductions in the UK in August. Most prices for medium grades stayed the same, though. British corrugated case material prices were also unchanged despite weak demand and price cuts in parts of Europe. Hefty energy costs and looming downtime were the main factors keeping prices stable. Insiders reported a few corrections within the existing spectrum of prices for cartonboard. Order intake remained good, but call-offs were still too sluggish. Looking ahead to September, larger surcharges or price increases are on the cards again to offset higher energy costs....
