Cartonboard prices on the British market go up in January

Cartonboard prices have increases on the British market at the turn of the year.

Buyers of white lined chipboard (WLC, GD board) had to accept several price increases during 2021, but many were facing substantial increases again as the new year started, depending on their baseline prices. What is more, WLC suppliers started to implement surcharges, or increased existing surcharges, from January, too.

Buyers of folding box board (FBB, GC board) that had entered into full-year contracts in 2021 (and therefore benefited from stable pricing during 2021), often had to accept significant rises at the turn of the year. Other converters of FBB with shorter price validity had already seen a hike of this same size in smaller instalments during 2021. Some FBB manufacturers also started to implement surcharges.

Cartonboard manufacturers felt that these hikes and surcharges were inevitable given the lasting increase in costs, above all for energy. Passing on higher costs was often simply a matter of survival.
