The French paper industry saw mixed results for the last year, recording a 6% increase in total annual sales, while production declined 3,2% and apparent consumption fell 2.2%, the papermakers' association COPACEL reports. President Jean-Marc Louvet said that 2011 was "disappointing", especially in the printing and writing paper segment, however, consumption of packaging and hygiene paper rose slightly. Markets were mostly balanced in the first half of the year, giving room for price increases. while many prices came under pressure in the second half, especially towards the end of the year. Market conditions in 2012 are uncertain and likely to be challenging, COPACEL said.
