Poland’s paper and board industry hoping for growth impetus after a difficult 2023

Prices slide again in all segments in fourth quarter

After an exceptionally weak year 2023 in many segments, Poland’s paper industry is hoping that 2024 will bring new growth impetus. Various companies are now in a difficult financial situation as a result of increased costs and lower sales prices. Yet, there appeared some green shoots in the order books for both corrugated case material and uncoated fine papers during the fourth quarter. And a local supplier of woodfree uncoated paper was even able to achieve a first price increase. In all other segments of the Polish paper and board market, however, a trend turnaround is not yet evident.

Quotes for newsprint and magazine paper, recycled corrugated case material and kraftliner as well as cartonboard declined either in the fourth quarter of 2023 or at the beginning of 2024 – and sometimes in both cases....
