Price pressure in German cartonboard market continues in May

|

There continues to be price pressure on the German cartonboard market in May. Producers of both board and folding cartons say that current demand and order intake in Germany are nowhere near satisfactory.

Most of the deals signed in April were quarterly contracts, so prices in early May did not move, according to producers and converters. For GC, however, monthly contracts have also been negotiated, although these are still quite rare on the market. There were only reports of individual price concessions in a few monthly purchase contracts, but these were not widespread.

In part because of the recent rising price trend for ordinary recovered paper grades, GD board producers do not see any room for downward price downward adjustments in May. Industry insiders surveyed in early May therefore expected prices to move sideways this month for GD board and greyboard, after price concessions were granted by producers in April.
