On May 1, 2019, insolvency proceedings were opened over Papierfabrik Scheufelen. Insolvency administrator Dr Philipp Grub of Grub Brugger Partnerschaft told EUWID that already 75 of the 95 employees of the company had been laid off and that the company was in the process of being liquidated.

Scheufelen, a traditional manufacturer of coated fine papers, had suffered from the structural decline in the market for printing papers when it started the production of grass paper (i.e. paper with a grass content) for packaging applications in mid-2017.

However, sales in the target markets for trays, bags and cartons developed slower than expected. Additional fixed costs further burdened the enterprise. As the company was not able to attract more investors, the opening of insolvency proceedings was inevitable to 1 May.
