Price cuts on Italy's fine paper market despite announcements for hikes

Some price increase announcements have been made for fine paper deliveries in Italy from April. Nevertheless, prices in February went in the opposite direction, with respondents reporting cuts.

Italian woodfree uncoated paper prices remained under pressure at the end of January and start of February. EUWID sources mentioned price cuts across all grades for February deliveries. Just a few premium grades are the exception and managing to maintain prices, sources in Italy said.

Supply and demand were not the only factors determining prices for these grades, one paper merchant stated. Customers' tastes and merchants' prestige were also playing a role here.

As the month drew to a close, however, a few paper manufacturers announced plans to charge more for woodfree uncoated paper deliveries from the start or middle of April. They are planning hikes in an attempt to relieve pressure on margins.
